Broadband expansion in the Hanover region
Fast bandwidths are a prerequisite for economic growth, competitiveness and digital topics such as cloud computing, Industry 4.0, smart home, smart city, telemedicine, teleworking, eGovernment, eCommerce and eLearning. Digital infrastructures and their intelligent networking are essential prerequisites for fully exploiting the potential of digitalization for innovation and investment.
In the Hannover Region, telecommunications companies are continuously investing in high-performance broadband infrastructures. However, privately financed broadband expansion only takes place where it is economically viable for the telecommunications companies. Accordingly, the supply situation in sparsely populated areas is often inadequate due to high development costs.
In numerous exploratory talks with the telecommunications companies, the Hannover Region's economic development agency was able to ensure that a large number of underserved areas were developed with broadband infrastructure by the telecommunications companies themselves or are to be developed in the coming months.
Despite ongoing and planned developments by telecommunications companies, some areas in the Hannover Region remain underserved. There is still a need for economic development to take action here in order to balance out regional disparities, secure the competitiveness of the location, remain attractive for skilled workers and improve the participation of citizens in social life.
