VR has long since moved beyond the entertainment and "gimmick" phase to become a productive IT tool. Well-known areas of application in industry include the creation of virtual prototypes, production planning and virtual training. Other areas of application include visualizations in entertainment, architecture, medicine or education/training. With the new visionary image of a "metaverse", the VR approach is entering a new technological phase.
