Successful use of drones for more environmentally conscious construction

26.06.2023 - The company Emch+Berger Projekt GmbH uses unmanned aerial vehicles to optimize construction monitoring services.

Some of the employees of the medium-sized engineering firmEmch+BergerProjekt GmbH fromHanover have already been working with drones in their free time. This allows them to create unique images and landscape shots. However, the potential of drone flights has also been discovered for professional use: drones can be used in construction projects to provide very precise information about the progress of construction work and the movement of materials. The rapid recording and measurement from the air can therefore be optimally transferred to the construction industry and thus also contributes to more environmentally conscious construction.

To realizethe project, the companywassupportedby the"Hannover Region Green Economy"funding programmeof the Hannover Region Economic Development Corporation. With this support, Emch+Berger Projekt GmbH purchased two drones and trained three employees as A2 remote pilots, as the commercial use of drones requires a detailed knowledge of the legal situation, meteorology and technology.

"Drones in the construction and engineering industry are not only suitable for taking photos or videos of projects or buildings, but also open up a range of diverse applications."
Bartek Jaroszewski, Head of Department for Digitalization and Sustainability

When using drones in the construction planning phase, for example, material movements can be recorded more precisely using aerial photographs. The traditional method, on the other hand, is significantly less efficient and sometimes less accurate. With unmanned aerial vehicles, on the other hand, construction monitoring services can be optimized. In addition, resources can be saved thanks to improved planning reliability. The method therefore also contributes to more climate-friendly construction.

"In particular, the tracking of material movements and their precise recording has so far tied up considerable human and technical resources. This often results in careless handling in the evaluation and monitoring of material movements.

With the help of the planned strategy, deviations from planning can be identified and evaluated with little effort. This therefore has a positive impact on the project budget, the duration of personnel deployment and prevents any unnecessary material expenditure (thus conserving natural resources).

"
Bartek Jaroszewski, Head of Department for Digitalization and Sustainability

Optimized construction monitoring using unmanned aerial vehicles is already taking place in the first projects at Emch+Berger Projekt GmbH.

But why is this method not used everywhere? - The difficulties with the use of drones relate to data protection and security. When flying a drone, images are taken of the surroundings in which people could be recognizable. A declaration of consent is sometimes required in order to use the photos or videos. In addition, safety must always be guaranteed when flying drones in order to avoid endangering people and objects.

Emch+Berger Projekt GmbH is convinced that only through the consistent use of digital technologies can we make our contribution to a more sustainable future.
