Training and studies

Around 85,000 young people are currently studying or training in the Hannover Region.

The economic development of the Hannover Region, like the competitiveness of companies, depends crucially on the availability of skilled workers. The conditions for an optimal supply of skilled workers in the Hannover Region are provided by a diverse and high-quality range of vocational training courses.

Education

Almost 36,000 vocational school students will be trained in a wide range of professions in 2023. A third of the students are learning technical professions (especially electrical, metal and automotive engineering), followed by business and administrative professions, as well as social professions (especially social services, social care) and health professions (especially health, nutrition).

There is increasingly less demand for vocational training. While the number of vocational students in the Hannover Region remained constant at over 40,000 for a long time, there has been a decline of 11% compared to 2019. In 2023, however, the negative trend in the number of trainees was halted for the time being. Contrary to the general trend, there has even been an increase in the number of vocational students in technical training occupations and in the healthcare sector.

Study

With Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo), the Hannover Region is a renowned science and research location. Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the University of Music, Drama and Media and the University of Economics and Management (FOM) also offer excellent and highly regarded teaching and training.

Around 49,000 students were enrolled at all universities in the Hannover Region in the winter semester 2023/24 (a decrease of 6 % compared to 2019/20) - almost half of these, 27,200, at LUH and a further 8,600 at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The MHH (4,000) and the TiHo (2,300) as highly specialized educational institutions also show a high attraction for Hannover as a place to study.

Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), the largest university in Lower Saxony, enjoys an excellent reputation, particularly in the technical and natural sciences, and is a member of TU9, the nine leading technical universities in Germany.

Science, research, technology transfer and start-up centers

As a cross-sectional function, science and research link various areas of the economy and are becoming increasingly important in a globalized knowledge economy. The Hannover Region has a diverse research and science landscape with internationally renowned institutes and departments: Specific strengths lie in the fields of medicine and engineering disciplines, predominantly in the technology-, research- and knowledge-intensive segments of the manufacturing industry, in particular the automotive industry and production technology.

In addition, Hanover's research institutions are involved in supra-regional research networks. There are many opportunities for companies to cooperate locally - both in research and development as well as in the training and further education of qualified specialists. The transfer of knowledge and technology between research institutions and companies is coordinated and promoted by numerous interfaces. Several start-up centers support young and innovative start-ups and young companies in the realization of their ideas.
