Employment trend

In the Hannover Region, the number of employees subject to social insurance contributions rose by a total of 5,600 compared to the previous year.

The main place of work in the region is the state capital Hannover with just under 346,000 employees, while 195,000 employees work in the surrounding area. Langenhagen (33,100 SVB), Laatzen (16,600 SvB), Garbsen (15,800 SvB) and Lehrte (14,900 SvB) are strong employment locations in the surrounding area.

Growing number of employees

Across all sectors, the number of employees subject to social insurance contributions (SvB) in the Hannover Region grew by around 80,500 to 540,700 people between 2013 and 2023 (as at 30.06.). The municipalities in the north-east of the Hannover Region in particular - Isernhagen, Burgwedel, Burgdorf, Uetze and Wedemark - recorded comparatively high employment growth.

Following weaker growth in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, employment growth remains comparatively slow. At +1.1% (+5,600 full-time equivalents), employment growth from 2022 to 2023 is below the pre-crisis level.

The positive employment trend compared to the previous year did not take place in all municipalities: only a third of municipalities recorded growth in the number of employees.
