Commuter links
Analyses for Lower Saxony show that the Hannover labor market region extends well beyond the borders of the region and is closely linked to the neighboring districts.
The number of commuters within the Hannover Region is high: 60 percent of the 543,000 employees in the Hannover Region are commuters, i.e. they do not live at their place of work. In addition to the state capital Hannover, Langenhagen, Isernhagen and Burgwedel also have a surplus of inbound commuters in 2024. On the other hand, Garbsen, Seelze, Neustadt am Rübenberge and Burgdorf, among others, have a large surplus of out-commuters.
In 2024, the Hannover Region will have around 140,000 commuters from outside the region - a quarter of all employees subject to social insurance contributions at the place of work (as at 30.06.). More than half of commuters from outside the region come from neighboring districts. On the other hand, there are around 72,000 employees who live in the Hannover Region but work outside its borders.
In addition to the positive employment trend , a number of factors are leading to changes in commuter networks, such as housing options, requirements and framework conditions for employees and the transport infrastructure.
The increased importance of remote work - for example, temporary work from home or coworking spaces - cannot be deduced from commuter networks, as only the place of residence and place of work are related, but not the frequency of travel.
