Employment trend
The main place of work in the region is the state capital Hannover with just under 349,000 employees, while 194,500 employees work in the surrounding area. The largest places of work in the surrounding area are Langenhagen (33,100 employees), Laatzen (16,000 employees), Garbsen (15,100 employees) and Lehrte (14,200 employees).
Growing number of employees
Over the period from 2014 to 2024, the number of employees subject to social security contributions (SvB) in the Hannover Region rose by around 73,000 to 543,200 people (as at 30.06.). The municipalities in the north-east of the Hannover Region in particular - Isernhagen, Burgwedel, Wedemark, Burgdorf and Uetze - recorded comparatively high employment growth.
Following weaker growth in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, employment growth remains comparatively slow. At +0.5% (+2,500 full-time equivalents), employment growth from 2023 to 2024 is below the pre-crisis level.
The current employment trend is very different in the municipalities: while the more rural municipalities continue to experience employment growth (e.g. Wedemark, Sehnde, Burgwedel, Wennigsen, Neustadt am Rübenberge), the large workplaces in the surrounding areas are experiencing significant declines in employment (e.g. Lehrte, Garbsen, Langenhagen).
